Pulse diagnosis workshop

Shen-Hammer Pulse Diagnosis

Pulse diagnosis for Chinese medicine and acupuncture practitioners

Where are you in the stages of learning pulse diagnosis?

  1.  Unconsciously Incompetent – You don’t yet know what you’re missing  but are curious.

  2.  Consciously Incompetent – You know what you don’t know—it’s overwhelming.

  3.  Consciously Competent – You can feel it, analyse it – with effort.

  4.  Unconsciously Competent – Insight arises through the fingertips – it’s second nature, intuitive and integrated.

In clinical practice, pulse diagnosis can either anchor your treatments or leave you second-guessing. Shen-Hammer Pulse diagnosis bridges the gap between theory and practice, guiding you through the learning stages with clarity, confidence, and precision.

Join us to study pulse diagnosis in a welcoming environment and learn to interpret a person's physiology.

Karen, a direct lineage holder of Shen-Hammer pulse diagnosis, has been teaching this method for over 20 years across the USA, China, New Zealand, and Australia.

Our workshops are structured to support your learning and are categorised based on your familiarity with the method.

1. Four day Foundations class - Ideal for those new to the method. At least 50% hands-on learning, it introduces methodology, theoretical framework, and provides skills for immediate use in your clinic.

2. Two day Intro-mediate classes - For practitioners growing their skill. A combination of instructor guided learning and a day of seeing live patients feeling pulses – interpreting findings and formulating treatment – acupuncture, herbs, lifestyle and referrals.

3. Two day Intermediate classes - For practitioners currently using this method in their clinic.  The entire workshop is focussed on pulse assessment of live patients, interpreting findings and devising management plans.

4. Review days - An opportunity to refine your technique and advance your skills. Dates can be found in our FB group.

Study pulse diagnosis in a friendly supportive environment and learn to read a person's physiology.

Would you like to gain deeper insight into your clients’ psycho-emotional patterns and behaviours?

Understanding personality as a dynamic expression of the energy transformations that govern physiology provides a diagnostic framework that aligns seamlessly with Chinese medicine. It allows for meaningful interpretation and treatment of both emotional and physical patterns.

The development of ‘Being’ is shaped by both genetic inheritance and the environment—from our origin as a single cellular union, gestation and birth, through the unfolding complexity of childhood to adulthood, and into the natural decline and eventual return to the elemental forces from which we arose.

Dr. Leon Hammer’s model of developmental ontological psychology offers a powerful and integrative lens for exploring this evolution. Rooted in Daoist cosmology, it maps the growth of the self through the Five Phases, reflecting the cyclical flow of yin and yang—the “great turning.”

  • Water marks the origin—life emerging from the depths of stillness and potential.

  • Wood brings growth and the initial, often negative, assertion of the self.

  • Fire represents full self-realisation, marked by positive and authentic assertion.

  • Metal guides individuation and the transformation of bonds, helping us release what no longer serves.

  • Finally, we return to Water, or Shao Yin, beginning the inward journey back to source.

  • Throughout every stage, Earth provides essential nourishment, nurturing our bonds that connect us while establishing the boundaries that protect and sustain us.

This rich and transformative material is delivered across five live Zoom sessions, blending deep theoretical understanding with practical clinical insight.
